Key Takeways:
After you’ve created your Wahed account, the next step is to complete your onboarding.
This step determines whether the investment is suitable for you and sets your investment limits.
It usually takes less than five minutes.
The OnBoarding Process
To start the onboarding, open Private Real Estate or the Real Estate Fund from the dashboard.
At the top of the screen, you’ll see a prompt to complete onboarding. The process has two parts:
- Appropriateness check
- Investor classification
You won’t need to upload documents again. Identity verification was completed during account setup.
Step 1: Appropriateness Check
You’ll first answer a few basic questions about how you intend to invest, including:
- Account type (currently individual accounts are supported only)
- Source of funds
This helps confirm the investment is suitable and meets regulatory requirements before you’re allowed to proceed.
Step 2: Investor Classification
Next, you’ll confirm whether you are an accredited or non-accredited investor.
This is required under SEC Regulation A and determines your maximum investment amount each year.
Your answers at this stage directly affect your maximum annual investment limit, so it’s important that you carefully and accurately provide the information. The app calculates your limit automatically and it cannot currently be edited later.
Investor Classification and Limits
Accredited Investors
You’re considered an accredited investor if you meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Have a net worth exceeding $1 million, excluding your primary residence; or
- Have earned over $200,000 annually (or $300,000 jointly with a spouse) in each of the past two years and expect to earn the same this year; or
- Hold a qualifying investment license (Series 7, 65 or 82).
Accredited investors are not subject to annual investment limits. However, there are still transfer restrictions set by our payment provider to ensure smooth fund settlement.
Non-Accredited Investors
If you don’t meet the accredited criteria, you’ll be classified as a non-accredited investor. You can still invest, but you’ll be subject to investment limits defined by the SEC and enforced by our platform.
These limits help protect investors and ensure investments remain proportionate to income or net worth.
Investment Limits for Non-Accredited Investors:
- You may invest up to 10% of your annual income or 10% of your net worth (whichever is higher) in any 12-month period.
- Once you enter your income and net-worth information, the system automatically calculates your personal annual limit.
Platform-Wide Transaction Limits (all investors)
Regardless of classification, our payment provider imposes additional limits for payment transfers:
- $20,000 per transaction
- $20,000 per week across Wahed Real Estate investments
These are system-wide funding limits and apply equally to both accredited and non-accredited investors. If your personal regulatory limit is lower, that lower amount is used.
⚠️ Important:
You won't be able to edit these details once they've been submitted. If you underestimate your figures (for example, state your net worth as $10,000), your investment limit will remain fixed at $1,000 per year (10% of that amount). Make sure the details you enter are correct and reflect your true financial position.
Tips for Completing Onboarding
- Double-check your financial details. They directly set your investment limit for the entire year.
- If unsure, estimate carefully. Once confirmed, the information can’t be edited.
- Keep your app updated. Using the latest version ensures your onboarding submission goes through smoothly.
It’s a regulatory requirement. Onboarding ensures every investor is classified correctly under the regulations and that all investments remain within permitted limits.
No. You won’t upload documents again during onboarding. However, the first time you open Private Real Estate or the Real Estate Fund, you will have to confirm your identity before onboarding begins.
Not currently. Once you confirm your details, your investment limit is fixed.
Your investment limit will be calculated based on what you entered. If it’s too low, it can’t be changed for the year, so double-check before submitting.
Usually less than five minutes.
What Happens Next
Once onboarding is complete, investing is enabled in that section of the app.
You can now:
- Review offering details
- Make your first investment
Each option has its own onboarding.
If you later open the other one, you’ll complete onboarding there before investing.
For example, if you finish onboarding in Private Real Estate and later open the Real Estate Fund, the fund will ask you to complete its onboarding before you can invest (and vice versa).
After onboarding, you can invest immediately. The Real Estate Fund allows you to invest multiple times over time, while Private Real Estate opportunities are individual properties that are only available while the raise is open.
