Once you’ve created your Wahed account, the next step is to complete your Real Estate onboarding.

This short process ensures your investments comply with U.S. securities laws and confirms your investor classification under SEC Regulation A.

It only takes a few minutes and allows you to access and invest in Wahed’s private real estate asset class directly through the app.

The OnBoarding Process

To start the onboarding, click on the “Private Real Estate” tile on the main dashboard.

You’ll see a widget on top of the screen prompting you to complete your onboarding. The process involves two key parts:

  • A short appropriateness check, confirming how you’re investing and how your account will be funded.

  • An investor classification, where you confirm whether you’re an accredited or a non-accredited investor.

Together, these steps help Wahed ensure your investments are kept secure and compliant, and also help us meet regulatory requirements.

Appropriateness and Investor Classification

The first part of onboarding collects basic information about how you intend to invest. For example, whether you’re opening an account as an individual (currently the only supported option) and the source of funds you’ll use.

After this, you’ll move on to investor classification, which determines your eligibility and investment limits under SEC Regulation A.

This is where you confirm whether you are accredited or non-accredited based on your income or net worth.

Your answers at this stage directly affect your maximum annual investment limit, so it’s important that you carefully and accurately provide the information.

Accredited vs. Non-Accredited Investors

Accredited investors

You’re considered an accredited investor if you meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Have a net worth exceeding $1 million, excluding your primary residence; or
  • Have earned over $200,000 annually (or $300,000 jointly with a spouse) in each of the past two years and expect to earn the same this year; or
  • Hold a qualifying investment license (Series 7, 65 or 82).

Accredited investors are not subject to annual investment limits. However, there are still transfer restrictions set by our payment provider to ensure smooth fund settlement.

Non-accredited investors

If you don’t meet the accredited criteria, you’ll be classified as a non-accredited investor. You can still invest under Regulation A, but you’ll be subject to investment limits defined by the SEC and enforced by our platform.

These limits help protect investors and ensure investments remain proportionate to income or net worth.

Investment limits for non-accredited investors:

  • You may invest up to 10% of your annual income or 10% of your net worth (whichever is higher) in any 12-month period.

  • Once you enter your income and net-worth information, the system automatically calculates your personal annual limit.

Platform-wide transaction limits (all investors)

Regardless of classification, our payment provider imposes additional limits for payment transfers:

  • $14,000 per week across all property investments.

These are system-wide funding limits and apply equally to both accredited and non-accredited investors.

⚠️ Important:

Your declared information cannot be changed later for now, even by the compliance team. If you underestimate your figures (for example, state your net worth as $10,000), your investment limit will remain fixed at $1,000 per year (10% of that amount). Make sure the details you enter are correct and reflect your true financial position.

Why do I need to complete onboarding before investing?

It’s a regulatory requirement. Onboarding ensures every investor is classified correctly under SEC Regulation A and that all investments remain within permitted limits.

Do I need to upload new documents for this step?

No. All your identification and verification details are already confirmed from account setup.

Can I update my investor classification later?

Not currently. Once you confirm your details, your investment limit is fixed.

What happens if I enter the wrong income or net-worth figures?

Your investment limit will be calculated based on what you entered. If it’s too low, it can’t be changed for the year, so double-check before submitting.

How long does onboarding take?

Usually less than five minutes. Once complete, you’ll get immediate access to private real estate in the app.

Investing in start-up limited companies carries certain risks which can include (but is not limited to) illiquidity; a potential lack of dividends; loss of the entire Investment and dilution, and it is your responsibility to satisfy yourself that this risk is acceptable to you. The asset owned by the SPV you hold shares in is a property that receives rent, this will be paid to you and the other shareholders of the SPV in the form of dividends, net of any fees, costs and expenses payable. In the event that the property does not produce rent or the amount of rent received is less than the amount of fees, expenses and costs payable, no dividends will be paid. As such, there is a risk that you will not see a return on your investment. Making an investment should be done only as part of a diversified portfolio. This means that you should invest in relatively small amounts into multiple assets / SPV’s rather than one or two. Further, you may only want to invest a small proportion of your investable capital in any start-up business / SPV and other money invested in safer, more liquid assets. Past performance should not be used as a reliability indicator as future potential is unknown and is independent of past performance.
